FAQ - Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30

Q1
:
Why do I need to use sunscreen?
A1
:
The sun not only gives out light and warmth, it also emits harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer. We need to protect ourselves against them by using sunscreen because it shields us against these harmful rays. Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 does this perfectly.
Q2
:
What does Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 do?
A2
:
Besides protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, the high Oxyginberry Complex content in Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 helps skin to lock in moisture for a visibly firmer appearance. Also provides potent antioxidants to combat free-radical damage.
Q3
:
What are UVA and UVB?
A3
:

The three types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation are UVA, UVB and UVC. Of these, UVA and UVB damage the skin differently and one needs daily protection against them both. The relatively long-wavelength UVA can penetrate most clear glass and plastics to reach the deep layer of the skin (dermis) and damage elastin fibers and collagen fibers. UVA causes skin aging and serious skin damage. UVA also triggers cells called melanocytes in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) to produce melanin (brown pigment that causes tanning). When too much melanin is produced, it may clump together to form age spots.

Medium-wavelength UVB has medium penetration ability. UVB is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer. Glass can also block out some UVB rays. UVB causes sunburn. Sunburn causes painful reddened skin, blisters and flaking. Sunburn also causes DNA damage that may lead to skin cancer.

Q4
:
What does SPF stand for?
A4
:
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, a number that indicates the duration for which a sunscreen can help protect your skin from sunburn. Your natural protection is the duration for which you can naturally stay in the sun without getting sunburned. Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 can help you stay in the sun for 30 times your natural protection. If your natural protection is 10 minutes, then Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 can protect you for 300 minutes (5 hours) for each application.
Q5
:
Is SPF rating the only factor to consider when selecting a sunscreen?
A5
:
SPF rating only indicates protection against UVB rays, not UVA rays. Hence broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended as they protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
Q6
:
What does “broad-spectrum protection” mean?
A6
:
“Broad-spectrum protection” means protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. They contribute to skin cancer. Not all sunscreens can effectively protect against UVA and UVB rays. Good sunscreens should provide excellent broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.
Q7
:
Is it true that applying a sunscreen with an SPF rating will help prevent tanning?
A7
:
No. SPF rating only indicates protection against UVB rays. UVA radiation is the main reason why skin develops a tan. Hence broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended to prevent suntan as they provide both UVA and UVB protection. Correct application is very important for sunscreens to work properly. Reapply sunscreen frequently when exercising outdoors and after sweating or washing one’s face.
Q8
:
Is it true that the higher the SPF rating, the better the sunscreen?
A8
:
SPF ratings are an important indication of sun protection but it does not mean that the higher the SPF rating, the stronger the sun protection. Generally, SPF15 and SPF30 sunscreens block about 93% and 97% of UVB rays respectively. Hence select a suitable sunscreen based on the duration of time spent outdoors, the intensity of sunlight, and your skin’s needs. For day-to-day use, SPF15 sunscreens are sufficient for office workers. For long hours outdoors e.g. during traveling, sunscreens with at least an SPF of 30 are preferable. While sunscreens with an SPF higher than 30 block only about 4% more UVB rays than SPF15 sunscreens, the U.S. Skin Cancer Foundation recommend the former for sun-sensitive individuals, skin cancer patients, and people at high risk of developing skin cancer. SPF ratings do not mean that a sunscreen provide both UVA and UVB protection. Hence one should not select a sunscreen based solely on its SPF rating. Check if a sunscreen protects against UVA rays too.
Q9
:
Which Elemente products provide sun protection?
A9
:
Protective Moisturizer For Men (SPF 10), Protective Moisturizer (SPF15), Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30, and Oxyginberry Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ provide broad-spectrum protection. They help to reduce UVB damage and protect against UVA damage.
Q10
:
What is the correct way to apply sunscreen?
A10
:
Sunscreens need some time to be absorbed into skin for them to work properly. Hence apply sunscreen 15–20 minutes before going outdoors. When applying, do not neglect parts like the neck, chin and ears. Reapply sunscreen every two hours when engaged in outdoor activity in strong sunlight and after swimming, washing one’s face and sweating.
Q11
:
Does using a water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF rating provide sun protection for an entire day?
A11
:
No. Even water-resistant and sweat-resistant sunscreen tends to be rubbed or washed off with water exposure or sweating. Reapplying sunscreen often is necessary to prevent serious sunburn after swimming or when outdoors for long hours.
Q12
:
How does one ensure adequate sun protection in summer?
A12
:

1. Avoid strong UV radiation. Peak hours for UV radiation are from 10am to 4pm because that is when the ozone layer filters out the least amount of UV radiation from the sun. Avoid outdoor activity during this time period.

2. Select a suitable sunscreen. Factors to consider when selecting a sunscreen include duration of time spent outdoors, the intensity of sunlight, and whether it provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays so as to minimize sun damage to skin.

3. Select suitable clothing and sun protection gear. Wear light-colored cotton or hemp clothes that are loose or long-sleeved. Wide-brimmed hats can shade the face, ears and back of the neck. Wear sunglasses that protect against UV rays and carry an umbrella.

4. Window films. High quality UV-blocking window films can effectively filter out UV rays to protect those indoors from skin damage caused by overexposure to UV radiation, and protect the contents of a room from the sun.

Q13
:
Is sun protection necessary in winter or on cloudy days?
A13
:
UV radiation is present throughout all seasons. Although clouds can block off some UVB rays, UVA rays and some UVB rays can penetrate clouds to hurt our skin. Hence take preventive measures by selecting a suitable sunscreen when going outdoors, regardless of season and weather condition. Sun protection is even more important during winter in snowy areas. Snow and ice reflect UV rays, causing indirect UV radiation exposure. Sand reflects about 20% of UV radiation while snow reflects as much as 80%–90% of UV radiation. Sun protection is essential since the amount of UV radiation skin is exposed to during winter is no less than during summer.
Q14
:
Is sun protection necessary if one stays indoors most of the time?
A14
:
Yes. UVA rays can penetrate glass windows to damage skin. Hence sun protection is necessary even if one stays indoors all day.
Q15
:
How do I use the Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30?
A15
:
Apply onto face and body 20 minutes before sun exposure to ensure that your skin is fully protected against harmful UV rays from the sun. Keep out of eyes.
Q16
:
When should I use Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30?
A16
:
Going to be in the sun for more than 20 minutes? It’s time to apply Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30.
Q17
:
What does "Broad Spectrum" mean?
A17
:
“Broad Spectrum” refers to the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. They contribute to skin cancer. Not all brands of sunscreen can protect against these two rays. On the other hand, Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30 provides excellent broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.
Q18
:
If I use Oxyginberry Hydro-Protective Sunscreen SPF 30, can I stay in the sun for as long as I want?
A18
:
Although sunscreens can block off most of the harmful rays from the sun, experts advise us to be exposed to a minimal amount of sunlight. Do not stay for too long in the sun. Stay indoors especially at midday, when the weather is hottest. There is no product that can protect you totally from the sun’s harmful rays. Take responsibility for your health.
Q19
:
Does sunscreen prevent us from having enough Vitamin D?
A19
:
No.
